Abstract

The development of science and technology, in addition to a positive impact also have negative impacts on human life. Therefore, the development activities and the development of science, technology, society should be involved in decision making related to the learning process. Designing learning material laden science technology and society studies social studies required the development of teaching materials in accordance with the characteristics of keIPSan. Withthe material based on dual coding theory be an alternative to the development of innovative materials. Objective: (1) determine the information visually and verbally (dual coding theory) in the material STM as help learning social studies (2) knowing how the verbal information that is concrete and significantly better (dual coding theory) in the material STM as help learning social studies on a distance education student. The place of research in the 3 study groups UPBJJ-UT Bogor, Tangerang and Jakarta. The research method through the following stages: The initial concept of pattern-based material dual coding, including: (1) the components of matter STM, (2) the study of theory about the ability of thinking and reflective attitude, and (3) designing and developing the material to form the design of learning materials STM-based dual coding, include: shape, construct materials, and design patterns, and to validate the design of materials using the following steps: (1) reflective Technically, (2) reflective contextual, and (3) the critical reflective in trials on S1 PGSD UT students. The number of samples is determined as many as 120 students and selected by proportional purposive sampling areas as research subjects. Based on the results obtained from the data: (1) The pattern of the material STM developed through a three-step research and development (preliminary study, planning and development), (2) the pattern of the material that resulted in the design contains material relating to: the purpose of material STM-based dual coding as part reflection students improve their abilities and understanding of concepts (reflective technical), associating it in the context of the experience (reflective contextual), and critically analyze the material and the problems studied on the subject through a review of the social (reflective critical), (3) Application of pattern material STM-based dual coding is done gradually. The research result indicates an increased understanding of the students when the learning material is presented using visual and verbal in teaching materials. Comprehension is reduced when the learning material is presented through text. The results also indicate that the material based on dual coding can improve students understanding regardless of the preferred learning style of students, and students who intuitive learning style tend to have a better understanding. Keywords: STM, Dual Coding Theory, Social Studies
