Abstract
Since the Lapindo mudflow submerges villages around it in 2006 ago, farmers and other residents had to move into some places that are considered safe. At the destination area the migrants lost their jobs as farmers and should try to get jobs opportunities and adapt to a new life. The shape and pattern of migration of farmers Lapindo mudflow victims is quite unique, because it happened to all people affected in the same time and the motive of migration is not economic factors, as most studies so far. This study aimed to describe the migration motive which are applied by migrant farmers Lapindo mudflow victims and identifying of migrants’ lifestyle and jobs opportunities at the destination. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study strategy. The data was collected through questionnaires and interviews with selected respondents snowball (snowball technique). Analysis of data using appropriate qualitative data analysis methods of Miles and Huberman (1992) point of view which divides three flow activities data analysis are: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions through verification. The results showed that the majority of respondents chose the destination of migration which is not far from area of origin (57.15%), the choice of the area of migration based on the decision of family members and utilizing social networks of kinship (66.66%), and the migration motive is not economic factors but finding the safety (88.10%). The majority of respondents (88.10%) have received cash compensation of land and rice field from PT. Lapindo, but they have trouble getting rice field at the destination and if any are quite expensive. Jobs opportunities in the destination did not provide many options, so migrants should try to get a job, but the educational background, skills and expertise sufficiently low so difficult for them to obtain job. Family lifestyle change, which not only drape life as a farmer, but many of those who switch jobs in the informal sector, such as selling food cake, snacks for kids, Taxi motor bike (Ojek) and labour. The results of this study advised to provide capital assistance for migrant farmers Lapindo mudflow victims at the destination so that it can help and even to have a life expectancy in the future.
