Abstract
The research "Strengthening the Political Orientation of Beginner Voters in Direct Local Elections" aims to encourage voter behavior by referring to rational choice theory. Currently voter rationalization is based on direct, general, free, confidential, honest and fair principles; many are co-opted by political choice because the influence of pragmatism and transactional actions so that the practices of money politics have a lot to color the constituent political choices, including beginner voters. Konawe Regency in 2018 was one of the regions that held direct regional elections. In terms of quantity, the potential of novice voters in this region is quite significant,because in the span of 5 years it is estimated that around 15% are beginner voters. The existence of beginner voters must be the concern of all stakeholders because in the age structure, they are transitional age groups that have the potential to be influenced by the choice of non-rational considerations. Based on these considerations, the purpose of this study is to identify the typology of the political orientation of beginner voters and analyze the model of strengthening political orientation ahead of direct regional elections. Research method with a qualitative approach supported by primary and secondary data sources. Data collection techniques with in-depth interview and observation techniques, while the data analysis technique is done by explaining the phenomena and facts related to the political orientation of the beginner. The results showed: the typology of the beginner voters' political orientation refers to a number of indicators such as: 33% political choice due to the influence of family institutions, 15% due to the influence of political institutions, 14% due to media influence, 14% due to social environmental influences; and 24% because of the influence of political brokers who emerged at the time of the elections with a transactional approach. Furthermore, the model of strengthening the political orientation of beginner voters is a strategy to strengthen political institutions based on values and political culture so as to produce egalitarian, honest, fair voters based on democratic principles. The findings show a model offer for strengthening political orientation, namely: a model of political symbolization, strengthening the capacity of political leaders / candidates,strengthening the candidates' vision and mission, and political marketting strategies.
