Abstract

Indonesia is a big country with many cultures; therefore, Indonesian children have to learn their local wisdom beginning with their early years. Young children are in their golden years, so they have to be helped to acquire all the knowledge they need, and parents and teachers should thus be aware of children’s needs. This study was an effort to increase early childhood teachers’ awareness of their own culture. Teachers have to develop some activities for kindergarten children to learn and embrace their own local wisdom, such as learning the traditional Indonesian dresses and languages. Children and teachers were asked about what they experienced in learning the Indonesian culture. The results show that both the teachers and their students were not really aware of their local wisdom, but after participating in the researchers’ study, the early childhood education students and the teachers had a positive response to the experiences.
