Abstract

The objective of the research is to study the influence of instructional strategy and locus of control on student's ability in solving environmental problems. Using factorial design 2 x 2 with n = 70 students selected randomly from four classes of 127 students, the study was conducted at Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Sciences Universitas Negeri Jakarta (FMIPA UNJ). The results of the hypotheses testing are as follows: (1) the ability in solving environmental problems of students educated in discovery-inquiry is significantly higher than those of students educated in expository, (2) the ability in solving environmental problems of students with internal locus of control is significantly higher than those of students with external locus of control, (3) for students with internal locus of control, the ability in solving environmental problems of students educated in discovery-inquiry is significantly higher than those of students educated in expository, (4) for students with external locus of control the ability in solving environmental problems of students educated in expository is significantly higher than those of students educated in discovery-inquiry, (5) there is an interaction. effect between instructional strateg!' and locus of control toward student's ability in solving environmental pmblems. The research concluded that discovery-inquiry strategy can be used to improve student's ability in solving environmental problems especially for students with internal locus of control.
