Abstract
The development of communication and information technology, encourages Universitas Terbuka, Indonesia (the Indonesian Open University) which employs distance education system to utilize various types of supporting media in the learning process, particularly for subjects with practical skills content. One of the subjects in the curriculum of the Communication Studies Program, at the Faculty of Law, Social and Political Sciences (FHISIP) is Public Speaking. The competency of this subject is requiring the students to be able to evaluate public speaking activities instead of practice public speaking skills due to the limitation of the learning process. Ideally, the subject is completed with practical activities. Therefore, to complete the practical skills for students who take Public Speaking subject, the Communication Studies Program develops an interactive video program in compact disc that attached to the printed learning material of Public Speaking. However, based on the results of Windrati et al.'s research on the Evaluation and Refinement of Interactive Public Speaking Video to Achieve the Competency of Public Speaking Subject (2017), it is revealed that students are not interested in learning the interactive video program due to the old-fashioned design of the video. The article explores the utilization of VirtualSpeech application as a means in supporting the learning process of Public Speaking subject. VirtualSpeech is an android-based application available in the playstore that teaches some Public Speaking skills. It is suitable as an example of alternative media for practicing some Public Speaking skills. The application then was tested to some students to gain their practical experiences. The results of the study show that students were able to feel the sensation of doing real public speaking activities through this virtual reality application. However, some recommendations are suggested by students in some aspects, for instance in the variant of the features, the language, and the instructions.
