Abstract

This was an experimental study which was carried out to confirm the effectiveness Of WhatsApp-based teaching technique on learners' listening skills and autonomy. It also confirmed the correlation between learners' listening skills and autonomy. The participants were the second year of secondary school learners who were selected randomly to be the experimental and control group. The instruments of the study were a pre-post listening test to measure the level of the learners' listening skills and pre-post LA questionnaire to measure the learner's autonomy level particularly on the usability, effectiveness and satisfaction dimensions. Those instruments were distributed before and after WhatsApp-based teaching technique applied to the experimental group. The reliability and validity of the instruments were confirmed before applied. The t-value significance score of both control and experimental groups' post listening test result analysis revealed 0.002. As it was less than 0.05, the differences were considered significant in favour of experimental group. This confirmed that WhatsApp-based teaching technique exposed an effective impact on learners' listening skills. Furthermore, the t-value significance scores of both control and experimental groups' post LA questionnaire result analysis showed 0.039 on usability dimension, 0.000 on effectiveness dimension and 0.001 on satisfaction dimension. All significance scores obtained were less than 0.05. Therefore, the differences were considered significant in favour of experimental group. This exposed that WhatsApp-based teaching technique was effective on learners' autonomy. Whereas, the Pearson correlation significance scores on both groups' post listening score and LA questionanire on its three dimension 0.451, 0.694, and 0.454 for control groups and 0.431, 0.399 and 0.134 for experimental group. All the scores obtained were more than 0.05. Therefore, there were no correlation between them. It revealed that the learners' listening skills did not correlate with their autonomy level. According to all of that, it could be concluded that WhatsApp-based teaching technique was very effective on learners' listening skills and autonomy for the secondary students. Therefore, the schools policy makers had better support the sufficient listening audio tools at schools as well as a wide and strong support to implement the teaching technique which integrates the technologies and innovations in the autonomous learning process. However, in regard to research content, researchers still need to enhance alike research on listening skills qualitatively as well as exploring other area of learners' autonomy which may deepen the studies and also broaden the research scope.
