Abstract

Social arithmetic teaching with teacher as the central figure could not help students in increasing their critical thinking skills. Character-based think-pairshare learning that starts with student thinking individually character traits: independent, hard-working, and discipline, then they pair with each other to share, to questioning critically, to arguing in order to fmd the systematic and right solution character traits: hard-working, curiousity, and discipline will. increase their critical thinking skills. This study used "Randomized Two-group Design, Post Test Only" design. The aim of this study is to know effectiveness of character-based think-pair-share learning for increasing critical thinking skills in social arithmetic which can be proved by students getting their passing grades, their critical thinking skills in average getting better, the positive influences of their characters (independent, hard-working, curiousity, and discipline) to their critical thinking skills, and the improvement in their characters. The entire population of students of class VII SMP Negeri 1 Bulu, Temanggung, Academic Year 2012/2013 consists of 5 classes. In cluster sampling, class VIIA became the test class, VIlA became the experiment class, and VIlli became the control class. The dependent variable is the ability to think critically, the independent variable is the think-pair-share learning and the character of students. Data obtained through post test and observatio~ and treated with t test, regression analysis, and Ngain test. The results showed that character-based think-pair-share learning is an effective method, which is characterized by students achieving the average grade 68,725 whereas the passing grade is 60,46; average grade of the students' critical thinking skills in experiment class is 68,725 which is better than the students in expository teaching class that obtain 58,5; positive influence of the character of students independent, hard-working, curiousity, and discipline to their critical thinking skills with Rsquare= 0,79; the improvement in their characters independent, hard-working, curiousity, and discipline with Ngain= 0,24.
