Abstract

In distance education systems both students and learning material are integrated and inseparable in the learning process. Students have to be able to study independently by using printed-learning material provided by Universitas Terbuka (the Indonesia Open University), including those students from the Mathematics Program of Studies, the Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Sciences. This study aims to the designed model of mathematics learning materials for distance higher education self-instructional learning. In this study, the observed-printed-learning material on the basis of was Algebra I (MATA4321), particularly in Chapter 1 “Operation”. In accordance with the characteristics of algebra which is very abstract, this study obtained 4 (four) designed models for delivery of “Operation” material. Model I is the existing learning material, Model II is more communicative than model I in term of delivering on theories, pictures and ilustration. Model III has many detailed examples and more communicative explanations than Model I does. Meanwhile, Model IV is a combination of both Model II and III.
