Abstract
In the millennial era, education and technology cannot be separated. Education needs technology to be more up-to-date and advanced. Teachers must be aware of this. The students have made one technological advancement. They know much about digital systems in their daily life. They use online applications for many activities. Not only playing games but also learning everything. They understand the English language using online courses, learn many subjects using online platforms, buy food and beverages using online services, and many others. Considering this phenomenon, the observer explored the on line application teachers can use to improve their teaching style. As a teacher, the observer also found students who needed help comprehending the text glancingly in the classroom. So,
this study combined text and digital tools (Robin, 2016) to improve EFL reading
comprehension. This study employed descriptive analysis using the qualitative research design (Cresswell, 2003). It used a purposive sampling technique. The data were gathered from four sources: classroom observations, think-aloud protocol, questionnaires, and interviews. The data were collected from twelfth-grade students of a Madrasah Aliyah Negeri in Majalengka, consisting of 10 classrooms containing 36 students each. They are EFL students who speak Sundanese in their daily language. This study was only held in one classroom, i.e., 12 IPA 3. In-class observation and think-aloud revealed improvement in students' comprehension. Then, the students were given the questionnaires, the results of which were positive impacts of digital storytelling. The last, ten students were interviewed to get their perspectives. The importance of this study is twofold; one is to illustrate that digital storytelling should be applied to teaching reading comprehension in an EFL context. The other is to discuss how to effectively build students' competency in the digital era and make recommendations for future discourse practice. Finally, the findings from multiple research instruments of this current study revealed that digital storytelling can improve EFL students' reading comprehension.
